Bored.
So since I'm sitting at my computer and surfing the net and not really feeling like doing anything tonight, I figured I'd update this on recent events.

I thought the comments were hilarious about my students, by the way, and really helped me feel not so crazy.

I'm headed to the dreaded X-mas (or "4 hours of driving and 24 hours of hell to go pick up stuff from Houston" as I like to call it). I'm hoping the presents are good, Mom hasn't had surgery, and that they limit the number of times they tell me I'm fat. Yay!

I think I'll be heading back here on X-mas day and then back to Houston toward the 27th, so I can fly from there to go to my job interview in Philly, then back to Houston, back to Austin by the 29th, and off to New Orleans on the 30th. I'll be much happier when the 30th has come around.

As for the job interview, I was lucky enough to get invited to interview at the MLA conference in Philadelphia by a university in Lacey, Washington. There are many pros and cons to Lacey, Washington and working for a Benedictine university, but I'm trying not to think about it for a while. You see, the invitation means I get to pay for my own ticket (as normal job interviews would pick up the bill, but since it's at the conference, they assume everyone would be going anyway and that they can pay their own way). It also means that I'm probably on the short list of about 20 (rather than the 200 applications that they probably got for this position). It's a generalist job with a 4/4 teaching load, which is good, but not fantastic.

The good part of this, whether or not they offer me the job is (in the words of my office mate), "I've broken the MLA barrier on my debut." For someone with a Ph.D from A&M, this is a pretty amazing feat. My chair nearly wet herself when she found out about it.

So I'm not leaving Austin yet or any time in the near future, but I'm excited. Except for having to fly to Philly again. I'm not a huge fan of flying and hanging out in a strange city by myself, but well, it's an adventure. I'm sure I'll have stories next week.

Hope everyone who read this has a happy holiday!

Hey, Benedictine scholars are at least bona fide scholars. Count your blessings that you're not stuck interviewing at a Baptist or Church of Christ school with a heavier teaching load in Alabama or Iowa or something.

If the market for English is anywhere as bad as for philosophy (and I've heard it's worse), you really have done amazingly well landing this interview your first season out. Congratulations and GOOD LUCK.

:-)
